Advice from a Jewish Mom

Advice from a Jewish mother to her newlywed son:

Son, remember that I love you, and all my unsolicited advice is just one way I show that love.

Don’t expect your wife to treat you the way I do. That will never happen; she didn’t give birth to you.

Always wash your own socks. The only thing that should do that for you is the washing machine. Period.

Change your toothbrush once a month.

Never say to your wife, "But Mom used to do it this way!"

Forget the phrase "But Mom’s version tasted better" once and for all!

Don’t complain to me about your wife. You chose her yourself!

Don’t tell your wife about your past relationships. Insist that you’ve forgotten everything!

Keep only "safe" information on your phone. Keep everything else in your head—train your memory and memorize any compromising details.

Always praise the food your wife cooks.

Never tell your wife about the arguments your father and I used to have. That was a long time ago, and it’s nobody else’s business.

If I get sick, come visit me once a week. It matters to me. And please, pick up some chocolate éclairs on your way...

When I ask you about phone settings, don’t get frustrated! Remember, I’m the one who potty-trained you.

Remember, the most important woman in your life now is your wife.

If your wife asks if a dress makes her look fat, always answer: "Of course not! In fact, I think you’ve lost weight!"

If your wife asks for something major (renovations, a fur coat, a car, a trip, an exercise bike, a robot vacuum, etc.), always agree—but only after she asks a third time. The first time a woman mentions something, she is simply thinking out loud; the second time, she is weighing whether or not she needs it; and if she says it a third time—it means she definitely needs it. By the third time, agree to it! Just get the timing right. Do it too soon, and she’s already changed her mind; do it too late, and she’s already offended... Flowers, chocolates, and lingerie don't count here. A wife shouldn't have to ask for those—they are sacred!

If I ask you to do something, do it the first time. Rest assured: I thought about it 333 times before asking you.

Never criticize your wife's parents. Remember, they brought into the world the woman you chose.

Keep growing. Read books, listen to lectures, attend workshops, and take courses.

Spend six evenings with your family and one with friends. This is essential for peace of mind.

Never visit anyone empty-handed. It is disrespectful.

Always acknowledge every holiday with your wife. Plus your wedding anniversary and the day you met. These things matter to women.

Smile before you open the door to your home! Remember, to your wife and children, you are a barometer of calm and reliability...
